US Wind Energy - The Eleven Stocks You Need to Know

In 2010 the US built around 5,100 MW of new wind power capacity, more than any other country except China. Current forecasts are that a similar amount of capacity will be built in 2011.

Yet it is difficult to find many stocks with a strong exposure to US wind, other than very small companies listed on the OTC markets. Take General Electric. It is America's (and one of the world's) leading manufacturers of wind turbines. Yet its wind business is a very small part of overall business.

Here are 11 stocks that are of reasonable size. All but one are listed on the NYSE or Nasdaq. All have a fair exposure to wind. These stocks should form the basis of your research if you are interested in wind energy as an investment theme.

American Superconductor – manufactures a range of components for the electric power industry, including wind energy converters and control systems.

Broadwind Energy – manufactures wind towers and wind turbine gearing systems.

Duke Energy – an electric power company with a growing wind energy component.
