Wind Energy in Canada - More Developments
|
The announcement by Canadian company Keewatin Windpower, listed on the OTC (KWPW), that it is to proceed with the acquisition of sister company Sky Harvest Windpower is another step towards realizing the goal of a big wind energy project in south-west Saskatchewan.
Sky Harvest holds land rights to develop the project on 8,500 acres of land and proposes a 150 MW facility.
It expects to erect over 80 turbines at a cost of some $350 million, and believes it can start delivering electricity in 2009.
The company has noted several advantages to its site - it is flat and open, which will minimize transportation and erection costs; in contrast to most wind farms, a transmission line runs through the site, so the cost of interconnecting with the power grid will be minimal; it is located near the Gardiner Dam, which opens up options for efficient power distribution.
Keewatin is one of an impressive number of Canadian wind energy stocks. Others include:
* AAER - Canada's only manufacturer of wind turbines of higher than 1 MW capacity.
* Canadian Hydro - a major developer of wind farm projects.
* Greenwind Power - another company involved in wind farm projects.
* NaiKun Wind Development - is developing a wind energy project off the north-west coast of British Columbia.
* Sea Breeze Power - is developing wind farms around British Columbia.
* Shear Wind - is developing wind farms in Alberta and Nova Scotia.
