Ten Solar Energy Stocks That Make a Profit
Despite all the recent stock market hype surrounding solar energy stocks and their prospects, most of them still do not make any money. Here are 10 that do.

Canadian Solar, founded in 2001, produces solar modules at its manufacturing operations in China.

First Solar is the stock that appreciated more than five times during 2007, and though it has retreated it is still on a three-figure PE, despite fast-growing profits. The company is a leader in the manufacture of thin-film solar cells.

JA Solar Holdings, another recent high-flyer, based in China, makes solar cells for other manufacturers to incorporate into their power-generating products.

LDK Solar, based in China, turned its founder into a billionaire and one of the country’s richest men when the share price soared last year. It makes low-cost wafers for use in solar cells.

MEMC Electronic Materials, founded in 1959, and hugely profitable, is a leader in the production of wafers for both the semiconductor and the solar industries, with manufacturing facilities in the US, Italy and Asia.

Solarfun Power Holdings, another Chinese company, manufactures both photo-voltaic cells and modules, and provides processing services.

SunPower, established in 1985, is a leading US producer of a range of products, from residential solar panels to large-scale solar power systems.

Suntech Power Holdings, based in China, is the world’s largest solar module manufacturer. Its boss, Zhengrong Shi, was at one point China’s wealthiest citizen.

Trina Solar is a Chinese manufacturer of solar wafers and related products.

Yingli Green Energy Holding is another Chinese manufacturer of solar wafers.
