Geothermal Energy in the United States – Eight Stocks to Watch
|
In mid-2007, total installed geothermal capacity was more than 2,850MW, with nearly 90 per cent of this in California, where five per cent of the electricity comes from geothermal plants. Most of the remaining capacity is in Nevada, with small amounts also in Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Utah and Wyoming.
But the number of relevant stocks is not large. Here are eight to watch:
Calpine Corporation is America’s leading geothermal power producer, with 19 power plants at The Geysers in northern California, and a generating capacity of 750MW.
Nevada Geothermal Power is developing power projects at three sites in Nevada and one in Oregon. It expects initial production from its Blue Mountain project in 2009.
Ormat Technologies is the third-largest geothermal power producer in the US, with further plants in Guatemala, Kenya and Nicaragua. It is also a leader in the manufacture of geothermal plants, which it has supplied to power companies around the world, and boasts 40 years of experience.
Raser Technologies specialises in electric motor technology. It has moved into the field of geothermal energy, and is working with United Technologies to build geothermal power plants. It is also developing its own power projects in Nevada, and plans to initiate production during 2008.
Sierra Geothermal Power, based in Vancouver, has an interest in 17 geothermal projects in Nevada and California.
U.S. Geothermal operates a geothermal power plant at Raft River in Idaho. Following testing in late-2007, the company announced in January 2008 that it had begun selling power to Idaho Power. It is developing a second project at Neal Hot Springs in Oregon.
Western GeoPower, based in Vancouver, is developing a geothermal project at The Geysers in Northern California, and expects to begin commercial production at a 25.5MW plant by 2010. It is also developing the South Meager Geothermal Project in British Columbia, with a target of commercial operation in 2011.
WFI Industries manufactures domestic and commercial heating and cooling systems that use geothermal energy technology.
