Energy Developments - Australia's Clean Power Producer
Energy Developments is a world leader in landfill gas and coal mine methane power generation projects. It also makes good profits.

The launch this year of a new LNG power project in the Kimberley, way up in the north-east corner of Western Australia, marks another step in the growth of Energy Developments, a leading global clean power producer. It raises the company's total generating capacity from 487 MW to 547 MW.

The company is a world leader in landfill gas, with 56 projects around the world representing about half its total generating capacity. According to the company:

The commercial utilization of landfill gas as a fuel requires the gas to be extracted from landfill sites with a reasonably consistent flow and quality. Energy Developments has developed a process which achieves this by drilling a pattern of vertical gas production wells across the landfill area. These wells are linked by an underground piping network to a central gas collection facility.

The entire system is maintained under a vacuum, inducing the flow of landfill gas into the collection facility where gas processing is undertaken to reduce moisture levels and filter out fine particles. The processed landfill gas is then used as a fuel in either gas engine or gas turbine generator sets. The power generation facilities are interconnected with a utility grid to enable the sale of electricity produced.

Energy Developments also leads the world in coal mine methane power generation, with a 97 MW project - the largest in the world - at the Appin and Tower coal mines in Australia's eastern state of New South Wales.

In addition, the company is a leader in the provision of power generation plants to remote areas of Australia, based on cogeneration or combined cycle (gas turbine) systems.

Energy Developments is profitable. In the six months to December 2007 it reported an after-tax profit of A$9.4 million, plus an extra A$5.1 million from the sale of King County landfill gas rights in the US, on revenues of A$97 million. Revenues were up 10 per cent from the same period of 2006, but profits were down, due mainly to the fall in the price of government Greenhouse Gas Abatement Credits.

The company has invested more than A$450 million over the past three years in new projects around the world, and expects these to make a growing contribution to its business in coming years.

These projects include the West Kimberley Power Project, now in a test phase, and a new 45 MW coal mine methane project in Queensland, Australia, due to commence operations later this year.
